MAGGIE ROGERS DOG YEARS

Maggie Rogers very nearly broke the internet when her preview of ‘Alaska’ was shared with a much moved Pharrell Williams during his visit to NYU’s music department back in March. That viral airing was followed by the release of ‘Alaska’ as her official debut, not counting the pre-existing Blood Ballet LP. What her new music shows is a unique take on electronic music influenced by Rogers’ time in France, Brooklyn and as a folk banjoist in her home state Maryland. That euphorically evolved style is once again the focus in sophomore track ‘Dog Years’. With an interesting assemblage of twinkling tin taps and the recording of some nocturnal animal, Rogers introduces her novel perspective on life: “I count my time in dog years, swimming in seven slow, dancing in seconds oh, and I'm the one who loves you.” Her voice is as good as we remember; those malleable pitches a leftover from her past as a folk musician. ‘Dog Years’ is certainly more brooding than her last release, but the lyrical imagery is just a potent, something which slickly careers around the smooth, understated slow-dance rhythms. If you’re dreading another Maggie Rogers drought after this, then fear not, as the new Capitol Records signee has promised an EP release early next year. - HT
